Local 49 Capital Care
Local 49 has a membership of approximately 1300 people working in long term care for the Capital Care Group. Capital Care is the largest public long term care provider in the Capital region, operating 11 sites in Edmonton and Sherwood Park, ranging from traditional long-term care to other housing options such as independent living suites at the Laurier Houses and specialized Alzheimer Care Centres. The Capital Care Group is a wholly owned subsidiary of Capital Health, the regional health authority.
Our members work in auxiliary nursing and general support services at the following sites:
Lynnwood Campus(including) Lynnwood Care Centre McConnel Place West Laurier House
Grandview
Strathcona Campus(including) The Strathcona Care Centre Laurier House Strathcona
Kipnes Veterans Centre
AUPE represents the Licensed Practical Nurses and Nursing Attendants at:
Dickinsfield and McConnell Place North Licensed Practical Nurses are represented by AUPE at: The Norwood Campus
Our members in Local 49 continue to experience less than optimal working conditions due to the chronic underfunding for Long Term Care in Alberta.
Both the Auditor General's Report and the government appointed MLA Task Force on Long Term Care, made recommendations speaking to levels of care and staffing quotas, among others. As of yet we have not seen these recommendations acted upon by our elected officials in the Legislature. Local 49 of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees continues in it's struggle to improve the working conditions for it's members and more importantly the living conditions of the most frail and unheard in our society, our residents.
