“There are ongoing threats of privatization and contracting out in various areas of health care. Our members are preparing now to actively oppose any moves by AHS to privatize or contract out any services that the public rely upon,” said AUPE President Guy Smith.
“As we have recently seen, and as we’ve always argued, contracting out eliminates accountability, responsibility, and stability from crucial areas of public health services.”
The protests are being organized by the union’s General Support Services locals in communities across Alberta. The events begin Monday, May 17 in Westlock, and will continue throughout the week at other locations including the premier’s office in Fort Saskatchewan, Stony Plain’s Westview Health Centre, the QEII hospital in Grande Prairie, and the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary.
Details including times, dates, locations and contacts for each demonstration are available in the attached schedule below or via AUPE’s online events calendar.
“Whether they are operating a surgical facility, seniors home, or security service, private businesses carry more risk. These are services we can’t afford to leave to the whims of the marketplace,” said Smith.
“Yet, even with the insolvency of the Health Resource Centre in Calgary and the failure of a number of privatized seniors homes brought to light, the Conservatives continue to forge ahead with more privatization. Like all Albertans, our members have had enough of it and they’re speaking out,” said Smith.
